Our Mission

The Mission of the Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum (EHSSM) is to provide a center for education, preservation, and study, of traditional Essex shipbuilding and the Community that has supported it for over 300 years. We value the skills, creativity, learning abilities, and connectedness to their environment of the Essex Shipbuilders and we believe that building a clear understanding and appreciation of their unique craftsmanship serves as a valuable model for us today.

Our Vision

EHSSM is a living connection between people, craftsmanship, and the natural world. Like the shipwrights of Essex, we work with our environment, knowing that the lessons of the past shape a more sustainable future. We are already a vital center for education, preservation, and community, and we are growing into a world-class maritime museum, a trusted source of regional shipbuilding knowledge, and a strong public voice for our shared waters. The legacy we carry is not just history, it is a call to action, ensuring that the traditions, skills, and stewardship of this place continue to inspire for generations to come.

Our Values

Honoring the Past – Preserving history, craftsmanship, and the shipbuilders’ deep connection to the environment.

Engaging the Present – Strengthening community through hands-on learning, shared traditions, and environmental stewardship.

Shaping the Future – Carrying forward ingenuity, resilience, and sustainability to inspire new generations.
